It is staggering where the time has gone. 2 years ago on the 13th January 2015 a miracle happened. Thandi the survivor of a brutal poaching and the inspiration behind TESA gave birth to her first calf after that horrific day in 2012. Thembi although she is now 2 years old, is still dependent on her mum for security and comfort. Rhino calves can stay with their mother until at least 3 years of age.
In September 2016 “Dancing for Rhinos” and TESA paid for Thembi to be dehorned. It is always a tough decision for any rhino owner to make but the Kariega team felt it was wise to help protect Thembi in the future. Tanja and Gerard West founder of Dancing for Rhino’s went to Kariega and help assist wildlife vet Dr William Fowlds with the dehorning.
