The microhaematocrit reader is used for reading the results of a packed cell volume (PCV): It reads the red blood cells, white blood cells and serum levels of an animal. This can give indications on dehydration, anaemia, infection and many other medical conditions. When orphans are brought in initially they are often suffering from all of the above problems.

These test results can be quickly obtained without having to send samples off thus giving valuable information straight away about the orphan’s health status and help us plan ahead to the next step of treatment and in many cases when caught quickly are often lifesaving.

We also received a Mc master counting chamber which is used for parasite egg counts and is such a useful and money saving piece of equipment for us as we regularly monitor our young orphan’s faeces to ensure they maintain a health hind gut.
